Dear User
This file contains important information about this program. Please read this information very carefully before starting work.
The OpenOffice.org Community, responsible for the development of this product, would like to invite you to participate as a community member. As a new user, you can check out the OpenOffice.org site with helpful user information at
http://www.openoffice.org/about_us/introduction.html
Also read the sections below about getting involved in the OpenOffice.org project.
Error Report Tool
The Error Report Tool starts automatically when a program crash occurs. If the program enters into an endless loop, so that it does not respond to mouse-clicks or keypresses, you can also start the Error Report Tool manually.
The Error Report Tool gathers all necessary information that can help the program developers to improve the code, so that in later versions this error can possibly be avoided. Please help us to improve the software and send the generated error report by e-mail.
Sun Microsystems is committed to respecting your online privacy and recognizes your need for appropriate protection and management of any personally identifiable information you share with us. See the statement at http://www.sun.com/privacy/ on your online data privacy at Sun Microsystems.
Known Limitations of the Error Report Tool for OpenOffice.org
The following limitations are only valid for OpenOffice.org. Please read this information very carefully.
You need Microsoft Outlook Express or Microsoft Outlook installed and configured as your default (MAPI) e-mail client to send these error messages. Mozilla 1.0, 1.2, 1.3 and Netscape 6.x do not send the created error message correctly and will not display any error message.
You need to have SendMail installed and configured on your system.
Starting the Error Report Tool
With most program crashes, the Error Report Tool will start automatically. However, if the program seems to be stuck and the tool does not start automatically, you can start the tool manually: Go to the OpenOffice.org program folder and start the 'crashrep.exe' file.
Completing the Report
On the main Error Report Tool dialog, you can enter some additional information that may help our developers to localize the error. For example, if the error only appears after a change in your hardware or software environment, or if you clicked on a button, please include that information.
Sending the Error Report by E-mail
The Error Report Tool uses your system's e-mail application to send the report data. You may optionally enter some descriptive text that will help us to identify the context of the program crash. Then click the Send button.
You may choose to respond to questions that our developers may have about the reported error. Mark the check box if you will allow us to contact you by e-mail, should additional information be required. By default this box is not marked, so you will not get any e-mail from us.
Please note: You will not get an answer to your error report. If you need support, please visit our Support Portal on the Internet.
What Data is Sent?
The error report consists of several files. The main file is an XML file with information about the error type, operating system name and version, memory usage, and the description that you entered. You can view the contents of this file in your e-mail client before you send the e-mail, and you can click the Show Report button on the main dialog of the Error Report Tool.
In addition, relevant memory contents and stack traces are gathered by some system standard tools ('dbhhelp.dll' on Windows systems, 'pstack' on UNIX systems). The resulting binary file is attached to the e-mail. You can view the contents with a hexadecimal editor, for example.

Note: Please be aware that administrator rights are needed for the installation process.
Note for Windows 98 users only: If you choose to install Java during the OpenOffice.org installation program, the installer will ask you to reboot your system. You should either ignore this message or open the OpenOffice.org installation program again after the reboot.
Difficulties starting OpenOffice.org (e.g. applications hang) as well as problems with the screen display are often caused by the graphics card driver. If these problems occur, please update your graphics card driver or try using the graphics driver delivered with your operating system. Difficulties displaying 3D objects can often be solved by deactivating the option "Use OpenGL" under 'Tools - Options - View - 3D view'.
Before installing OpenOffice.org, one or more operating system patches from SUN Microsystems must be installed. You can find them on the program CD in the following directories or download them at http://sunsolve.sun.com
Operating system patches required:
for Solaris 8: 108434-11, 109147-28, 108993-33, 108435-16 (64 bit), 109148-28 (64 bit), 110934-12, 110380-04
for Solaris 9: 111711-04, 111712-10 (64 bit), and 113713-03
for Solaris 8: 108436-10, 108994-32, 109148-28, 110935-12, 110403-04
for Solaris 9: 111713-02, 114568-02
The versions mentioned above are the minimum requirements, newer (higher) version numbers are also allowed.
You can install OpenOffice.org 2.0 alongside of an older version of OpenOffice.org. If you later choose to deinstall the older version of OpenOffice.org, you must call the installation program of the newer version and choose 'Repair'. This ensures that the new version is correctly registered in your system.
Please note that copy and paste via clipboard between OpenOffice.org 1.x and OpenOffice.org 2.0 might not work in OpenOffice.org format. If that happens, choose 'Edit - Paste Special' and choose a format other than OpenOffice.org, or open the document in OpenOffice.org 2.0 directly.
Please make sure you have enough free memory in the temporary directory on your system and that read, write and run access rights have been granted. Close all other programs before starting the installation.
Network Installation: Error When Calling the OpenOffice.org Quickstarter
If, when starting the system, problems should occur in calling the OpenOffice.org Quickstarter (e.g. invalid link), this is probably due to the fact that the network drive on which the network installation is installed is not yet available.
In most cases, this happens when the network drives are logged in via a login script, thereby establishing the connection for the network drives parallel to running the programs of the autostart group from which the Quickstarter is also started.
To avoid this problem, the network drive should be connected via the system's services. If this is not possible, the link used to call the Quickstarter can be removed from the autostart group of the system, or the Quickstarter can already be disabled when installing the workstation installation. If the system administrator already disabled the Quickstarter during installation of the network installation, then the Quickstarter cannot be selected by the user in a later workstation installation.
Deinstalling a Network Installation Under Common Desktop Environment (CDE)
The shortcuts set in the CDE in a network installation are not automatically removed during deinstallation. Before deinstallation, enter as Administrator (root) the following command line to remove the shortcuts from the CDE: /usr/dt/bin/dtappintegrate -u -s [path to OpenOffice.org].
Example: /usr/dt/bin/dtappintegrate -u -s /usr/local/OpenOffice.org2.0
Problems During Program Startup on Gnome
If you experience OpenOffice.org startup problems (most notably while using Gnome) please 'unset' the SESSION_MANAGER environment variable inside the shell you use to start OpenOffice.org. This can be done by adding the line "unset SESSION_MANAGER" to the beginning of the soffice shell script found in the "[office folder]/program" directory.
Important Information for Arabic and Hebrew Versions
If the user interface of the Arabic or Hebrew versions shows blanks or squares instead of text, please install the most recent Java Runtime Environment (JRE 1.4.1) before running the OpenOffice.org Installation Program. The JRE will install the fonts required for Arabic and Hebrew versions.
Ai Squared ZoomText 7.11
If you want to use Ai Squared ZoomText with OpenOffice.org 2.0 , you need version 7.11 or higher. The date of the Ai Squared ZoomText download must be after June 12, 2002 for it to contain all the necessary program enhancements.
Mozilla Address Book Driver
The Mozilla address book driver requires the SUNWzlib package. This package is not part of the minimum Solaris operating system installation. If you require access to the Mozilla address book, then add this package to your Solaris operating system using the command "pkgadd" from the installation CD.
Changing the User Interface Font
In OpenOffice.org you can change the font used for screen display and printing by replacing it with a different font installed on your system. This can be done using the font replacement function. Choose 'Tools - Options - OpenOffice.org - Fonts' to access the font replacement table.
To change the font of the OpenOffice.org user interface, you have to replace the default font "Andale Sans UI" with another font and mark the "always" setting for this replacement.
Refer to the OpenOffice.org Help for a detailed explanation of the dialog.
Shortcut Keys
Only shortcut keys (key combinations) not used by the operating system can be used in OpenOffice.org. If a key combination in OpenOffice.org does not work as described in the OpenOffice.org Help, check if that shortcut is already used by the operating system. To rectify such conflicts, you can change the keys assigned by your operating system. Alternatively, you can change almost any key assignment in OpenOffice.org. For more information on this topic, refer to the OpenOffice.org Help or the Help documentation of your operating system.
File Locking
In the default setting, file locking is turned on in OpenOffice.org. To deactivate it, you have to set the appropriate environment variables SAL_ENABLE_FILE_LOCKING=0 and export SAL_ENABLE_FILE_LOCKING. These entries are already in enabled form in the soffice script file.
Warning: The activated file locking feature can cause problems with Solaris 2.5.1 and 2.7 used in conjunction with Linux NFS 2.0. If your system environment has these parameters, we strongly recommend that you avoid using the file locking feature. Otherwise, OpenOffice.org will hang when you try to open a file from a NFS mounted directory from a Linux computer.
Problems When Sending Documents as E-mails From OpenOffice.org
When sending a document via 'File - Send - Document as E-mail' or 'Document as PDF Attachment' problems might occur (program crashes or hangs). This is due to the Windows system file "Mapi" (Messaging Application Programming Interface) which causes problems in some file versions. Unfortunately, the problem cannot be narrowed down to a certain version number. For more information visit http://www.microsoft.com to search the Microsoft Knowledge Base for "mapi dll".
