Base natively supports some flat file database formats, such as the dBase format. You can also use Base to connect to a external relative databases, such as databases from MySQL or Oracle.</paragraph>

<paragraph role="paragraph" id="par_idN107CC" xml-lang="en-US" l10n="NEW">%PRODUCTNAME Base creates a new database file the same way as a new document file.</paragraph>

<paragraph role="note" id="par_idN107E7" xml-lang="en-US" l10n="NEW">The database file contains queries, reports, and forms for the database as well as a link to the database, where the records are stored. Formatting information is also stored in the database file. Apart from a few exceptions, the database file does not include database records.<comment>UFI: but the Embedded database spec tells that it is possible. You can edit the structure of your tables and change the contents of the data records.</paragraph>

<paragraph role="paragraph" id="par_idN107ED" xml-lang="en-US" l10n="NEW">Data from any database file can be registered to %PRODUCTNAME. To register means to tell %PRODUCTNAME where the data is located, how it is organized, how to get that data, and more. Once the database is registered, you can use the menu command <emph>View - Data source</emph> to access the data records from your text documents and spreadsheets.</paragraph>

<paragraph role="paragraph" id="par_idN10824" xml-lang="en-US" l10n="NEW">Data is stored in tables. As an example, your system addressbook that you use for your e-mail addresses is a table of the addressbook database. Each address is a data record, presented as a row in that table. The data records consist of data fields, for example the first and the last name fields and the e-mail field.</paragraph>

This is basically a name for the new view at the filtered data. You open the query and see the current data in the table layout that you once defined.</paragraph>

Open a text document or a spreadsheet and insert the controls like push buttons, list boxes, and more. In the properties dialogs of the controls, define which data they should show.</paragraph>
